1935 Velocette Mac

1935 Velocette Mac

I have acquired a 1935 Velocette Mac, (my birth year). I am excited to be adding to my collection of English bikes (9 in total). Some would say I am addicted to restoration of what some would consider masterpieces. I plead guilty. 90% of the bike is there, albeit in a sorry sate. See photos...

As always I capture the bike as is with photographs, this is for a before and after understanding but it is obviosly very helpful in re assembly

Starting the Restoration

As usual the first thing I do is to remove the wheels and tank for ease of dismantling
To action this I use the stand which allows both wheels to be off the ground and subsequently ease of access

Wheels

The rims and spokes are in very sorry state of repair I been able to locate a specialist JTR                        at Clevenland where I have been able to buy new rims and spokes for the same configuration as             original and will respoke wheels myself I have retored hubs and I am waiting new rims an                    spokes

Brake hubs cleaned and painted Spoke hubs with spoke supplier

Rims are new and had to be drilled spokes supplied and the task was to respoke wheels with particularly attention to hub position in horizontal plane with respect to rim, this is it ensure chain engagement is correct and also aligns with couple of attempts but finally got it right

Girder Forks

Next task was to reassemble girder forks it was discovered that the spindle which houses the friction discs was not standard had to new one machined to correct dimensions thus allowing full adjustment of tension on forks

Bought new tyres and had them fitted Guards had been bought from India Guards from India were not satisfactory I made front guard do but I am having Vintage Steel make rear guard to ensure it is concentric with rear wheel

Fitted headlight after manufacturing new brackets happy with result

Gear Box

The gear box has presented some major problems as listed below

  1. Cracked casing
  2. Missing and broken teeth on ratchet gear for kick starter
  3. Third gear missing entirely
  4. Selector rods incorrect was able to new ones machined
